Gold IRA Red Flags: 10 Warning Signs Before You Invest
A reputable precious-metals conversation should give you time, written information and room to say no. If the pitch depends on fear, urgency or secrecy, slow down before moving retirement money.

1. “Guaranteed” returns or safety
No legitimate dealer can guarantee that gold will rise or eliminate investment risk. Treat promises of certain gains, “no risk” or guaranteed protection as a serious warning.
2. Pressure to act immediately
Claims that you must buy today because of an imminent market collapse are designed to shorten your decision process. A sound retirement decision should survive a night of careful thought.
3. Prices that are not provided in writing
Ask for the exact purchase price, current spot price, dealer spread or markup, and expected liquidation value. A low annual account fee does not compensate for an unexplained metal price.
4. Heavy promotion of collectible coins
Some coins carry substantial premiums based on rarity, grading or sales narratives. Ask why a particular product is being recommended and whether a lower-premium IRA-eligible alternative exists.
5. Vague “free metal” promotions
Promotional metals may be funded through higher prices or spreads. Ask how the promotion affects the price you pay and request a comparison without the offer.
6. Encouragement to store IRA metals at home
Personal possession can create tax problems. Confirm custody and storage requirements with the IRA custodian and an independent tax professional.
7. No independent custodian or depository details
You should know the legal name of the custodian, the storage provider and every recurring fee before transferring funds.
8. Resistance to buyback questions
A buyback program is not the same as a guaranteed resale price. Ask how the price is calculated, who pays shipping and how long settlement normally takes.
9. Instructions to conceal information
Never participate in an arrangement that asks you to misstate ownership, value, possession or the purpose of a transaction.
10. Advice presented as certainty
Be cautious when a salesperson tells you exactly what percentage of your retirement assets to move without understanding your finances, time horizon and tolerance for volatility.
Your five-minute protection checklist
- Get the complete transaction and annual costs in writing.
- Verify the custodian and depository independently.
- Understand the difference between spot price and the dealer’s price.
- Ask what you would receive if you sold the same day.
- Discuss tax consequences with an independent professional.
- Keep copies of every agreement and confirmation.
