Gold IRA Storage and Custodian Rules Explained
A Gold IRA is not simply a box of coins kept at home. It is a self-directed individual retirement account with a custodian, specific metal requirements and an approved storage arrangement. Understanding those roles before moving retirement money can prevent expensive mistakes.
See What the Free Guide CoversThe three parties in a typical Gold IRA
1. The account owner
You decide whether a precious-metals IRA fits your goals, how much of your retirement savings to allocate and which eligible metals to purchase. You should receive written pricing and understand every fee before approving a transaction.
2. The IRA custodian
The custodian administers the self-directed IRA, maintains records and reports required information to the IRS. A precious-metals dealer may help coordinate the process, but the custodian is the organization responsible for the retirement account itself.
3. The depository
The physical metals are generally held by a qualified trustee or custodian rather than stored in the account owner’s home. Depositories provide secure storage, inventory controls and insurance arrangements. Ask whether storage is segregated or commingled and how withdrawals or distributions are handled.
Why home storage deserves caution
Promotions for “home-storage IRAs” can make personal possession sound simple. IRS rules, however, generally require IRA assets to remain under the control of a qualified trustee or custodian. Taking personal possession may be treated as a distribution, potentially creating taxes and penalties.
Before considering any arrangement that promises IRA tax treatment while allowing you to keep metals at home, obtain independent tax and legal advice in writing.
What metals may be held?
Internal Revenue Code Section 408(m) identifies certain coins and bullion that may qualify when applicable fineness and custody requirements are met. Collectible or numismatic value alone does not make a coin IRA-eligible. Ask the custodian to confirm eligibility before any purchase.
Questions to ask about custody and storage
- Who is the IRA custodian, and what are its annual administration fees?
- Which depository will hold the metals?
- Is the storage segregated or commingled?
- What insurance and auditing practices apply?
- What are the storage, shipping and transaction charges?
- How are distributions, sales and required minimum distributions handled?
- Will I receive written confirmation identifying the metals held for my account?
